| | Telephone Directory Books vs Human Brain, who will win? | | Do you have trouble reading a phone book? How is it in your area? Here, our phone book is about 6 inches thick, and mostly useful for smashing bugs!:) I have a whole stockpile in the closet, I never know what to do with the old ones. They do have recycle places for them, but who wants to drive 60 miles to recycle them? If you put them in a garbage sack for the trash collector, you get a little note that says "too heavy for pickup". One thing the phone companies make sure they do is send you plenty of phone books! We have doubles of all of them, their are different companies, and separate ones for just yellow pages.Try to find any subject in them. Allow at least 3 hours per subject. To me, it makes no sense to say "see something else" if you wanted "something else" you would have looked it up first, right?:)Yesterday, my husband had to get his drivers license renewed. Since we are fairly new to this area, I get out the phone book. I thought start with "Drivers Licence", I found it in the "D" section, right off! It said "see government", so I went to "Government", it said "see Federal, State, or County Government". Ok well where is Drivers' license? Finally I went to... | |
| | | | Do you call the first number in the book? Aardvark taxis? | | I was just having a walk during my lunch break and I noticed a car that had a sign on its roof saying it was from the "Aardvark School of Driving". Now what has an aardvak got to do with learning to drive?Of course, lots of companies use these silly names so that they can be the first in the list in the telephone directory.Do you phone the first one in the list when you look for a compnay in the telephone directory - be it plumber, solicitor or taxi company? Or do you look down the list for familiar names, or the closest firm? Would the name Aardvark ctch your eye - or do you think that this marketing ploy doesn't work? | |

| | My Offline World is picking up. Does it mean I will be online less? | | Just when I thought I would be stuck forever, a few things started happening. My brother who had brought in an agricultural technician told me tonight if I could handle the technical aspects of banana plantation and I said yes, of course. Large scale multinational corporations have brought about banana epidemics due to their "shock and awe" techniques of blasting pests and viruses with pesticides and fungicides which kill not only the pests but also the beneficial microorganisms. My technical style is to bring about the health of the ecology by strengthening the beneficial microorganisms which will in turn keep the environment healthy for the banana. This is one thing. The other thing is that I have just gotten the data for the list of businesses operating in my city which means that I can now create a website which will feature all the businesses and add to that a telephone directory and I would pretty much have an informational and economic picture of what my city is like. A third thing is, I might be creating an accounting and management information system for a medium-sized cooperative. There is a fourth thing which is kinda difficult to describe but which is... | |
